How it works
The tool multiplies the amount at the start of each line by the new servings divided by the old ones. Fractions like 1/2 and 1 1/2 are understood, and results come back as easy kitchen fractions such as 3/4 or 1/3. Lines that start with words instead of numbers, like "salt to taste", are left as they are.
What does not scale perfectly
Some parts of a recipe do not change in a straight line when you halve or double it. Check these yourself:
- Cooking time. A smaller batch often cooks faster and a bigger one slower. Start checking early.
- Pan size. Use a pan that suits the new amount, or the depth changes and so does the bake.
- Spices, salt and leavening. Add less than the maths says at first, then taste.
- Single eggs. Half an egg is hard to measure. Beat one egg and use about half by weight.
Common questions
How do I halve a recipe?
Enter the original servings, then enter half of that as the servings you want. For a 4 serving recipe, type 2.
How do I double a recipe?
Type twice the original servings. A 4 serving recipe becomes 8.
Does it change cups into grams?
No, it keeps your units. To switch units, use the cooking converter after scaling.
